What We Do
Adopt-A-Prison Yard Project
The Adopt-A-Prison Yard Project was launched in 1993 with the targeting of two prisons, one state prison and one federal prison. The state prison chosen was California Institute for Women (CIW) and a Men's Federal Prison Terminal Island, both in California. The concept of "turning prisons into universities was based in the logic of reform and rehabilitation. With a virtual captive audience, success was practically guaranteed. Churches and Community Based Organizations were encouraged to Adopt-A-prison Yard and nurture it and prepare the minds and souls of those returning to the community for behavioral change. With the forming of the African-American Women Prisoners Association (AAWPA) and NABSIO becoming their outside sponsors, the project became a successful model producing it's first Ph.D, Dr. Romarilyn Baker in 2009 and transforming the CIW compound to resemble a college campus. Terminal Island proved to be a bit more difficult and the process is on-going.
Family Support Network
The Family Support Network (FSN) is a logic based model designed to build and establish a support system of families, friends and church community to provide an effective reentry for those coming back to the community through informed training programs for the families.
